The project involved examining the interrelationships between the Madrid Region, cinema, and tourism from a multidisciplinary perspective (Geography, Film Studies, and Tourism Studies), seeking to link features and transformations in the Madrid territory with movie productions filmed within the area.

As such, the project was able to obtain information and insight into the imaginaries created by cinema. The movies inventoried for this project were used as witnesses to the changes undergone by the city of Madrid and the Madrid Region, while at the same time, as tourism promoters and guides.

A noteworthy aspect of the project is, first, the creation of the Madrid Movie Map, viewer of filming locations in the Madrid Region. Secondly, besides its academic findings, specific and tangible proposals were presented to develop “products” aimed at fomenting tourism in Madrid.

Objectives

  • To provide a theoretical and methodological framework as a guide for using helpful information in movies to analyze territorial processes in diverse settings.

  • To draw up a methodological guide aimed at assessing the tourism potential of fiction films.

  • To create a document showing the territorial transformations that took place in the Madrid Region during the last century, using fiction films as a common thread in these processes of change.

  • To show the ranking in importance of the different landmarks and iconic spots in the Madrid Region by examining their frequency of appearance and narrative relevance in the movies. To indicate the changes occurring in this ranking over time, and the reasons behind such changes.

  • To undertake an assessment of the impact on tourism of movies set or filmed in Madrid.

  • To create a general digital mapping, showing precise filming locations. The mapping will be done with SIG tools by geo-referencing the filming locations and incorporating them into a digital map database.

  • To create partial mappings, specialized according to their topic or spatial settings.

  • To design tourism routes and tours based on information derived from analysis of movies shot in Madrid.

  • To develop contents for subsequent use in portable electronic devices that can be utilized by visitors and tourists in Madrid, which will include filming locations as well as venues for other tourism resources.

  • To create audiovisual products that synthesize the project’s main results for use in diverse acts and events (teaching activities, conferences, tourism fairs, etc.).
