GeoCine is a multidisciplinary research team at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, interested in studying the relationships between geographic space and audiovisual fiction. Its principal lines of research work focus on analysis of filming locations for movies and fiction series.

Identifying and geo-referencing filming locations to create viewers and maps for audiovisual fiction shot in Spain.

Geographic imaginaries

Analyzing representation of geographic space and examining the mechanisms for constructing imaginaries created by series and movies.

Urban transformations

Detecting and describing morphological changes in Spanish cities by observing images from audiovisual fiction productions.

Audiovisual fiction and tourism

Research into the impact of filming on territorial tourism development, analysis of screen tourism in Spain, and creation of film tours.

Geographic space and diegesis

Analyzing space as a narrative and expressive resource, and exploring mechanisms for representing locations through movies and television fiction.

FICMATUR

The main objectives of the project ‘La ficción audiovisual en la Comunidad de Madrid: lugares de rodaje y desarrollo del turismo cinematográfico’ (Audiovisual fiction in the Madrid Region: filming locations and development of screen tourism) (FICMATUR) is to create an inventory of the Madrid’s Region’s audiovisual heritage. . Specifically, it focuses on demonstrating the potential that fictional images shot in the region have as a tourism resource, for their symbolic value and as a means for disseminating the region’s geographical, historical and natural heritage. At the same time, the project seeks to identify and study shooting locations as a narrative and expressive resource.

FACES

The principal goal of the project ‘Las ciudades españolas en la ficción audiovisual. Registro documental y análisis territorial y audiovisual’ (Spanish cities in audiovisual fiction. A document registry and territorial and audiovisual analysis) (FACES) is to create a geo-referenced image bank from movies and fiction series shot in Spanish cities. It is aimed at analyzing imaginaries associated with these territories based on their audiovisual heritage, studying the link between these productions and tourism, and exploring the relationship established between pro-filmic spaces and diegetic spaces.
